Silicate brick

Silicate brick is a ubiquitous and well-known material for the construction of private houses. It has been used universally for many years, so reviews of silicate brick will be objective and reasonable. Today it is chosen for construction due to its low cost and sufficient strength, which only increases with time. The brick has a classic shape and a pretty good appearance, so that the house subsequently does not require external decoration.

Developer reviews on the use of silicate brick

Defective Lipetsk silicate brick
A comment
Three years ago, they began the construction of a country house, and silicate brick manufactured in the city of Lipetsk was chosen as the material. The brick was delivered with some marriage, it consisted of the following: some cells were almost half destroyed in every 5 bricks. And I have no doubts at all, I believe that this is a 100% manufacturer’s marriage, delivery has absolutely nothing to do with it.

In addition, there is a problem associated with color deviation in batches of bricks. Initially, the manufacturer promised that over time the color will equalize, explained that darker bricks just need to dry better. But 3 years have passed, and deviations in color as it was, it is.

Also, some bricks were with poor geometry. So I do not recommend buying this silicate brick, the quality is clearly lame. And then the cost for it is audibly overpriced, for such a quality.
pros
Strength, more or less accurate dimensions.
Minuses
Inconsistency from batch to batch, in the season (summer), the manufacturer allows marriage.

Strength and fragility of silicate brick
A comment
This brick has amazing strength and I checked this feature from my own experience. When she built her house, the brick was unloaded in a completely barbaric way - in bulk. Imagine: 2.5 thousand pieces of facing bricks fly from the height of the MAZ body. And surprisingly, as a result of a broken brick, she counted only 8 pieces. And its fragility manifested itself in chips on the edges, as can be seen in the photo. But this does not matter, since the chipped bricks went to the laying of the wall, which is located near the fence. For 10 years the brick has not turned yellow and I am pleased with its quality.

I would like to say a few words about the silicate, yellow version of the brick. Its color is so natural that the wall laid out of it looks like a natural material. If at the time of my construction this color was on sale, then I chose it. The brown color of this brick is rather arbitrary: with a pink tint it will look in combination with white or yellow.
pros
The price is much lower than that of ceramic bricks. Strength.
Minuses
Heavy.

Silicate brick - environmental friendliness and affordable price
A comment
I have long wanted to make an extension to the house, but still could not allocate money for it. The neighbor built himself a garage of silicate brick and, as it turned out, invested in a small amount. Without hesitation, I also decided to use this brick for my construction. They brought it on pallets, which is very convenient for storage.

In addition to the extension, I laid out the pipe to the boiler from the street with silicate brick too. The appearance of the buildings completely satisfies me - the brick looks like a real stone, strong and strong.White color of a brick favorably emphasizes its advantages - environmental friendliness and reliability. The internal partitions in the annex do not let in sound.

Of the disadvantages of this brick, I can distinguish too high moisture absorption - hygroscopicity. I solved this problem simply by buying a special waterproofing agent and treating the walls with it.

For 2 years after construction, the building did not collapse, the brick did not crack, frost resistance is also excellent. In the future I plan to use silicate brick for other buildings.

Silicate brick
A comment
Silicate brick was and remains the most budgetary solution to the issue of self-supporting building envelopes of buildings and structures. Its bearing capacity allows masonry thickness in frame buildings of 25 cm (one brick), with a floor height of up to 5 meters. If you make a wall of this brick without insulation, the wall thickness will be significant. According to current design standards, the masonry thickness in the climatic zone of the middle strip is 64 cm. This is due to such a minus of silicate brick as hygroscopicity.

Unlike ceramic, it draws water into itself, as a result, its thermal conductivity increases and is strictly forbidden for use in zero cycles, for laying sanitary partitions, and underground wells. If poor-quality drainage from the roof does not provide protection for the masonry walling from dampness, the masonry can freeze over 5-10 years.
pros
Cheap, excellent sound insulation, no need to veneer
Minuses
It is destroyed under the influence of high temperatures and increases the requirements for waterproofing, as it is afraid of dampness.
