Ondulin pros, cons and characteristics of roofing
Today, gray shabby slate is no longer in trend - after all, many more beautiful and modern roof coverings have appeared. Here, for example, an elegant multi-colored ondulin, the pros and cons of which are lively discussed at various construction forums. It is also beautifully called Euroslate, and the roof of ondulin looks very presentable. But what is the quality of it we will consider in this material.

Ondulin production: raw materials, technology, material properties
This roofing, invented by the French, is 100 percent organic in origin. During its manufacture, cellulose fibers are heated and compressed strongly, corrugating. The temperature should be 120 degrees, not less. Finished wavy sheets are painted in a wide palette of colors. Next is the impregnation of bitumen with the addition of polymers.
The material is safe and environmentally friendly. In addition, it is distinguished by its amazing water resistance - in this quality it surpasses almost all roofing materials. And on the roof, thin cellulose fibers, when heated by the sun's rays, are even more soldered together, which adds resistance to water.
About the benefits of ondulin
- Let's start with the already mentioned water resistance of this material. As mentioned above, the sheets of ondulin are impregnated with a special composition that provides 100% protection against moisture and prevents it from penetrating into the depths of the material. We also note that the nails in the ondulin are hammered to the highest point of the wave, so rain cannot wet the roof in this place. Its droplets just flow down like a hill. Moreover, the sheets of ondulin are overlapped, which adds tightness to the coating.
- Ondulin has high environmental safety and hygiene.
- This roofing is not afraid of either alkali with acids or products made from oil (for example, gasoline). And industrial gases cannot spoil it. Manufacturers claim that microorganisms and fungi also do not live in ondulin, but this is not entirely true.
- Another advantage of this coating is the lightest weight. A standard sheet of ondulin, two meters long and almost a meter wide, weighs just nothing - 6.5 kg. That is, it is 4 times lighter than a slate sheet of about the same area. Therefore, it is not difficult to transport ondulin, and it will not be difficult to lift it to the roof. And you can do it alone, without waiting for a partner.
- Installation itself can be done quickly - after all, the layout of the ondulin sheets is not at all complicated. And the rafter system for them does not need a particularly strong one.
- You can cut ondulin into pieces of the right size with a simple hacksaw on a tree. And if a little grease it with oil, then even in two ways you can manage.
- By bending the material, you can give it any shape. Therefore, the roof they can cover the most bizarre.
- It is worth noting the low price of the material - about $ 5 per sheet. It is cheaper than metal. Thin (0.35-0.45 mm) metal coatings will not be taken in comparison - they are very fragile. Slate is one third cheaper than ondulin, but let's not forget about the harmful asbestos contained in it.
- The advantages of ondulin include its noiselessness. Indeed, in the case of a metal coating, sound insulation cannot be dispensed with. Otherwise, not only the annoyingly loud knock of rain will be heard, but even the stamping of birds on the roof.
Does ondulin have flaws?
But what without them - there is nothing ideal. However, part of the shortcomings is manifested due to improper installation, excessive savings or trivial laziness. So, we will begin to list the disadvantages of ondulin.
1. Strength. Some reviews have complaints about its low strength. Like, one cannot step on a roof without breaking through the risk, nor can such a roof withstand heavy snowfall. But often the reason lies in the incorrect installation of the rafter system and a violation of the technology for installing the material. Indeed, for fastening one sheet you need at least 20 nails, and some save them, reducing the number by almost 2 times. But subject to the required step of the crate - 0.6 meters with a slope of more than 15 degrees - the ondulin can easily withstand almost a ton of load per square meter. Therefore, snowfall he certainly is not afraid.

This photo clearly shows that when installing the sheets of Ondulin, an insufficient number of nails was used.
In the summer heat, you should not walk on a softened coating of ondulin - it may not bear the severity of steps. In addition, in extreme heat, an unpleasant odor of bitumen fumes can be clearly heard.
2. Fire hazard. Another disadvantage is fire hazard. Well, yes, ondulin is essentially organic, and therefore it burns. But with what to compare - with an expensive metal tile of the best grades? A cheap "tin" roofing is not a hindrance to the fire - it will burn out instantly.

3. Durability. Someone's ondulin coating collapses in a couple of years. But there are homeowners who do not get enough of such a roof for 15-20 years. Firstly, it depends on the operating conditions. If they are extreme, and only the best metal tiles can withstand them, then ondulin will soon collapse. Secondly, you should not save on installation and quality of fasteners, doing everything according to the rules.
4. Loss of color. Over time, the roof of ondulin loses its color, fading in the sun and becoming dull. If this happened quickly, it is likely that not the real ondulin (which is painted before the bitumen is impregnated) is used, but its analogue. However, over time this happens with the original coating.
And this is an example of the fading of the ondulin roof and the protrusion of bitumen sheets onto the surface.
6. Biological resistance. After 2-3 years, mosses and various fungi begin to attack the surface of the roof. As a result, poorly lit places turn green. The same drawback - flowering - is inherent in the slate.
If everything is done correctly, then the ondulin roof can serve as quite reliable protection for the building. But in any case, it loses to all roofing materials in terms of strength and durability. Its use is justified in case of shortage of funds. In this case, it is necessary to mount the sheets on the crate and in small steps or a solid base.
We list the technical characteristics of ondulin
- The standard size of the ondulin sheet: thickness - 3 mm, width - 0.96 m, length - 2 m, wave height - 36 mm. Leaf area - 1.92 m2. The weight of one sheet is 6.5 kg.
- Ignition - from 230 to 300 ° C. Fire safety class - KM5 (the latest). In medical and child care facilities, the use of ondulin due to combustibility is not recommended.
- The load that can destroy ondulin is 0.96 tons per 1 m2. In the first place, it is not the roofing material itself that is destroyed, but the lathing and the rafters.
- Chemical resistance is high. The material does not react to alkalis, acids and oil products.
- Hygiene and safety are at a high level. There is a hygiene certificate.
- Water resistance is excellent. Moreover, the material does not pass water during the entire period of operation.
- The life span of the manufacturers warranty is 15 years.
- Available in red, brown, green and black.
